For Red Bull, the Mercedes is within the rules

Following the true/false statement from the team principal of Red Bull, the team has expressed its opinion about the new concept introduced by Mercedes. The latter arrived on Thursday with almost invisible sidepods and aerospace-inspired technology.

For certain teams, like the Scuderia Ferrari, the question of legality arises. But for Christian Horner, there is no doubt about it. Mercedes came up with an extreme [solution], it’s a different interpretation, explains Horner. But the answer to the following question, do we think it’s legal or not? Yes, absolutely. It seems to tick all the boxes, the British man believes.

« You know, comments were quoted without ever having been made,” he said. » I think the car is, obviously, very innovative. It’s an interesting solution for us. The Mercedes single-seater seems to comply with all the regulations. It’s just a different interpretation, a different solution,” Christian Horner admits.

Yesterday, Ferrari questioned this new concept, arguing that it was pushing the limits of regulations a little too far and requesting a verification.

But the head of Red Bull does not agree at all. There isn’t really one thing that defines the spirit of the regulations, either it’s compliant or it’s not. It’s not really up to us to judge, admits Horner. The FIA has access to all the designs. A design like this was probably proposed in advance. It’s an interesting, even radical concept. So, is it fast or not? Only time will tell, but in terms of compliance, it’s much more of a problem for the FIA, concludes the team principal of the Austrian team.

For Mercedes, there is no doubt about the legality of the concept. The team’s director and shareholder, Toto Wolff, admitted that the FIA was involved in the process, considering the amount of information exchanged between Mercedes and the federation.
