There will be no more grid girls in F1!
In an effort to modernize, the new Formula 1 owners announced today the removal of grid girls in Formula 1 and the other categories during race weekends in 2018.
It is through a laconic statement that Formula 1 is skipping a tradition that has existed for decades: there will be no more grid girls starting from the 2018 season.
These young women who held the signs indicating the names and numbers of the drivers at their positions on the starting grid of a Grand Prix are therefore a thing of the past. To justify a decision that might seem unpopular, Sean Bratches, the Commercial Director of the discipline, explains: In recent years, we have been considering the different areas that needed to be revised to be more in line with our vision for this sport. Although the presence of grid girls has become a habit for decades in Formula 1 Grand Prix, we found that this custom does not align with our brand’s values and is clearly in contradiction with modern social norms.
But it is also with organizational concerns in mind that this decision was made: « Formula 1 considers the time spent by teams and drivers on the grid before a race as a celebration, where guests and various artists can bring glamour and spectacle to the Grand Prix, allowing promoters and partners to showcase their countries and products, further specifies Bratches.
