Official: Sirotkin as main driver and Kubica as reserve driver at Williams in 2018

The last available seat in Formula 1 for the 2018 season has just been taken. It’s Sergey Sirotkin who has snagged the spot and will become the teammate of Lance Stroll for the upcoming year.

The Russian driver, who has been knocking on the door of the discipline for years, is understandably relieved to finally make his grand debut, especially with the Williams team: « Saying that I am happy and proud to join a team as renowned as Williams is an understatement. It took a lot of work to get where I am now. I am truly very happy and I thank everyone involved in this decision. »

If this choice may seem surprising from the outside, it is logical for Claire Williams, the team’s Director: “After a long process of evaluating drivers, I am delighted that our 2018 duo is finalized, and I am looking forward to seeing what next season will bring. We took our time to assess all available options, and I am confident that Lance and Sergey can deliver the best results for the team. The philosophy of Williams has always been to promote and develop young talents, and Sergey perfectly fits into this philosophy. Lance had a record-breaking first season, and with one season now under his belt, he will be ready to hit the ground running in 2018. We have a talented driver lineup for 2018, which can deliver exciting results for the team.”

Once considered a potential starter, Robert Kubica will ultimately have a role as a reserve and development driver within the team: « I am extremely happy to join the Williams team as the official reserve and development driver this season. I feel in the best physical shape I have ever been, but it took a lot of work to get to where I am now, so I want to thank Williams for the opportunities they have given me so far, and for trusting me. I have enjoyed being back in the Formula 1 paddock these past few months, and I now look forward to working with Williams’ technical team, both at the factory and on the track, to really push the development of the FW41 and make a real difference in their 2018 campaign. My ultimate goal remains to race in Formula 1. This is an important new step towards that goal. » the visibly satisfied Pole states.
