2017 Review: Editorial Ratings and Rankings

The Motorsinside editorial team took advantage of the year-end reviews to rate the drivers and teams with a score out of 20. Drivers with the same score were ranked based on their best race finishes. Another particularity, Carlos Sainz’s score is an average of those obtained during his time with Toro Rosso and Renault.

Unsurprisingly, the two main contenders of this 2017 season are at the top of the editorial team’s rankings. The reigning world champion, Lewis Hamilton, nearly achieves perfection with a score of 19/20, followed by Sebastian Vettel who leads by half a point over Red Bull driver, Max Verstappen.

Kimi Räikkönen, in the other Ferrari, found himself relegated to a distant 13th position, symbolizing the disappointment caused by the Finnish driver’s season, once again devoid of any victories.

In the French camp, it’s Esteban Ocon, who had an excellent season, leading the way with his 9th place. Following him are Romain Grosjean, a solid 15th, and Pierre Gasly, 18th in his first Grand Prix.

Besides the flattering ranking of Verstappen, it is Nico Hülkenberg, with Renault in a final 7th place, and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, who makes it into the Top 10, that have progressed the most. Daniil Kvyat, Antonio Giovinazzi, and Marcus Ericsson close out the ranking.

For the Constructors, it’s Force India that creates a surprise by securing an astonishing 3rd position. The small Indian team impressed the editorial staff with its determination, consistency, and ability to achieve good results with a much smaller budget than the teams it surpasses in the championship, namely Renault and Williams. Similarly, Haas also secures an astonishing 5th place in our ranking.

Renault, in fact, is only 8th in our ranking instead of its flattering 6th place in the championship. The French team will have a lot to prove in 2018, especially against McLaren, which will now be equipped with the same engine as them. This will be one of the main duels to watch next season.
