Kvyat takes out Sainz on the first lap and jeopardizes his position at Toro Rosso

Daniil Kvyat once again caused panic on the first lap of the race. The Russian, already involved in an accident at the first corner of the last Grand Prix in Austria, ended up colliding this time with his own teammate, Carlos Sainz, ending the latter’s race and thus annihilating all of Toro Rosso’s hopes for points.

The Russian, however, doubts that the incident is attributable to him: « I was ahead and on a dirty line, so it’s normal to have understeering at those moments, and all of a sudden, the accident happened. These things occur, and sometimes they are unavoidable. It’s really unfortunate because it damaged both our cars, which I feel really sorry about. »

Explanations that struggle to convince Franz Tost, the team’s Sporting Director: « It was a great disappointment for the team, as the worst-case scenario that could happen is a collision between teammates in the first lap of the race. This should not have happened today. »

Without mentioning the main victim of this incident, Carlos Sainz, who doesn’t mince his words about his teammate: “I’m not going to talk about what happened today on the first lap with Daniil, the images speak for themselves. It’s very frustrating not to have finished another race. Of course, I’m disappointed but with 20 races on the calendar, there will always be this kind of situation at some point. That’s why I’m not worried and very calm.”
