Vettel loses big at Silverstone, Räikkönen secures the podium for Ferrari
The two Ferrari drivers were forced to make a pit stop at the end of the race due to punctures, thus depriving Räikkönen and Vettel of a solid result. The German sees his lead in the world drivers' championship diminish.
The end of the British Grand Prix was eventful for the two Ferrari drivers, much to their dismay. Successively, Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel experienced front-left tire delaminations, thus ruining their hopes for good results on the Silverstone track.
Second at the time of the incident, Räikkönen was nevertheless able to climb to the third step of the podium: My race was going pretty well until a few laps before the end. I suddenly had this problem, my front left tire went without warning. The air stayed in the tire, but the rubber part came off. It’s disappointing because without this problem, the second place was secured, and we deserve a better result, stated the Finn, staring into space after the race.
The same problem therefore affected Sebastian Vettel, who loses big in this affair by securing a disappointing 7th place: « It was a difficult race. The brakes locked on the grid and I think that’s why I had no grip at the start: they were too hot. In the last few laps, after the problem with the front left tire, I tried to recover the car and save some points. »
For a long time stuck behind Verstappen’s Red Bull, Vettel reflects on their rather heated battle at the start of the race: « It was difficult today because I was stuck behind Max at the beginning, but it’s not up to me to judge what happened between him and me. » specifies the German.
The fact remains that the two Ferraris simply didn’t have the pace to win the race: « We did what we could, but obviously there is work to do to catch up with Mercedes on tracks like that. It is certainly not our strongest circuit. I’m curious to see what will happen in the next race, I guess the Hungarian track should suit our car better. » concluded Kimi Räikkönen.
After the race, Pirelli launched investigations into the issues encountered by the two Ferrari drivers and concluded two very different causes: a tire delamination for the Finn and a puncture for the German.
