Official: FIA investigation into Vettel’s gesture in Baku
The FIA has decided to take a closer look at Sebastian Vettel's controversial wheelie with Lewis Hamilton on lap 20 of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
This 20th lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix continues to make headlines. While under the safety car regime, Sebastian Vettel collided with the rear of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes at the exit of turn 15. Furious, the Ferrari driver then drew level with his rival and gave him a wheel bump.
The image, amusing for the spectators, did not make Lewis Hamilton or the governing bodies of Formula 1 laugh at all. The FIA has therefore decided to open a supplementary investigation to potentially sanction the Ferrari driver. The latter had already received a 10-second Stop & Go penalty during the race.
« In view of the recent incident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which car #5 (Sebastian Vettel) was involved in a collision with car #44 (Lewis Hamilton), the FIA will thoroughly investigate the causes of the incident on Monday, July 3, to assess whether another decision is necessary. » states the press release made public yesterday.
The verdict is expected to be delivered before the next Grand Prix, scheduled in Austria for the weekend of July 7 to 9.
