Wehrlein to undergo new scan next week

18th place, Pascal Wehrlein experienced his moment of glory during this Monaco Grand Prix, albeit not by choice. Having pitted on the first lap, the German was holding off Jenson Button in a battle at the back of the pack. After being overtaken by Vettel’s Ferrari, the McLaren Honda driver saw an opportunity to pass the Sauber.

However, the former Manor driver firmly closed the door, at the Portier corner. The entanglement between the wheels of the two cars was terrible: the Sauber took off into the air, on its side, ending its course against the wall outside the track. Trapped between his car and the wall, Wehrlein had to be freed by the marshals. But the DTM champion managed to walk normally on his own to the medical center. The usual check-up was mandatory after such an impact.

In any case, his annoyance was visible at the journalists’ microphones who came to meet him. Jenson Button was not spared! « He was nowhere, it was clearly not the corner to overtake. It was a dangerous maneuver! I hit the barrier with my head, so I’ll have another scan next week for my back, we’ll see. I was able to get out of the car myself, it seems to be okay. Obviously, I’m not sure! I remember everything. It was just frightening! The car’s brakes started to smell, and I couldn’t get out of the car. Yet that’s the only thing I wanted to do at that moment! »

Attempting to absolve himself of any responsibility, the McLaren-Honda driver had warned the higher authorities beforehand of possible collisions: « The cars are difficult to see in the mirrors. I told the team and the FIA. I tried to avoid it but it was too late and we touched. His tires were completely dead, I thought I was going to have him on the inside. For a race driver, it’s difficult to drive without attempting an attack! »
