Renault: Hülkenberg crashed, Palmer did little driving
Nico Hülkenberg was one of the drivers who tried to reach the limits in wet track conditions. The German crashed out in FP1, ending his program, while Jolyon Palmer set no time.
« It’s really unfortunate for the fans. For everyone’s enjoyment, I hope the conditions will improve by tomorrow. » Summarized in one sentence by Jolyon Palmer, the feelings of all the drivers for this first day of testing at the Chinese Grand Prix.
However, the Renault drivers tried to bring a bit of spectacle, like Nico Hülkenberg who completed 6 laps before ending his car’s run in the gravel trap: I managed a flying lap on intermediate tires, but that’s all! We had adjusted the front wing and I was starting a new lap, but I was caught off guard at the entrance to the third corner. I spun and unfortunately, the car ended up in the gravel. That put an end to my session. The session was interrupted shortly after, so we didn’t lose much. It was a shame for everyone in FP2.

A day lost for everyone, as confirmed by Nick Chester, the team’s technical director: We didn’t learn much today due to limited track time. It’s a shame for the fans who made the trip, but unfortunately, the medical helicopter couldn’t fulfill its role. So we were forced to stay in the garage. The positive side is that there’s less work to do on the cars overnight! We hope for better conditions and more running tomorrow.
