Pérez breaks with sponsor ironizing Trump’s election
Sergio Pérez has decided to terminate his sponsorship contract with the Hawkers eyewear brand following the latter's ironic Tweet about future US President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the Mexican border.
The election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States has given rise to numerous comments, even in the world of sports.
Indirectly, Formula 1 is not immune to this phenomenon. Indeed, Sergio Pérez decided to terminate his sponsorship contract with the eyewear brand Hawkers after the latter posted an ironic Tweet about Donald Trump’s intention to build a wall between Mexico and the United States. This tweet suggested that Mexicans use their sunglasses to hide their tears tomorrow when the wall is built.
Offended by this somewhat awkward phrase, Sergio Pérez announced that he was immediately ending all collaboration with the brand: « Today, I end my relationship with Hawkers. I will never let anyone make fun of my country », the Mexican declared on his Twitter account.
The Force India driver was notably supported by Esteban Gutierrez, who backed his statements.
@SChecoPerez muy bien! 👍🏼 #MexicoUnido
