Mercedes finds the cause of Hamilton’s engine failure in Malaysia

It took time for Mercedes to explain the engine failure that Lewis Hamilton suffered in the final laps of the Malaysian Grand Prix held last weekend in Sepang.

In a press release, the German team explains that a broken connecting rod at the crankshaft due to a loss of oil pressure in the last corner of the circuit is the reason for the retirement of car number 44.

Lewis Hamilton initially expressed doubts regarding the bad luck that seemed to haunt him and his power units. The three-time world champion is indeed the only driver powered by Mercedes to have seen his engines fail three times during the season.

In hindsight, the Briton had then apologized and assured his team and mechanics of all the support he provides them in their quest for victory.

This fragility of the engine block does not worry Nico Rosberg either, who specifically stated on the official Formula 1 website: “I’m not worried, and in any case, it’s not something I can have any influence on. I trust the team and that they are doing their best to prevent another engine failure.”

For the Japanese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will use the power unit that was in his car for the Singapore race. Therefore, he will not incur any penalties at Suzuka.
