Wolff: "He’s the best Nico Rosberg I’ve ever seen"
Nico Rosberg won the Singapore Grand Prix in style. Not only did he regain the lead in the world championship drivers' standings, he also impressed Toto Wolff by winning like a (future?) world champion.
There are victories that are more or less significant in a driver’s career. The one achieved in Singapore by Nico Rosberg will surely have a special place in his personal records as the German driver demonstrated an impressive pace, both in qualifying and in the race, on the Marina Bay circuit.
A performance worthy of a world champion that did not go unnoticed by Toto Wolff, the sporting director of the Mercedes team: « I have known Nico [Rosberg] since 2013, and this weekend, it’s the best Nico Rosberg I have ever seen! » exclaimed the Austrian after the race.
The comparison with his illustrious teammate, a triple world champion, is inevitable in this respect: « We usually say that Lewis Hamilton has an impressive pace. And that’s what we saw this weekend with Nico. He was just incredibly fast. He was almost 6 tenths quicker between FP2 and qualifying, something we’re not used to seeing here. »
A speed and success that, according to Wolff, surely somewhat hindered a Lewis Hamilton who was very uncomfortable during the weekend: « Lewis didn’t have a very clean weekend. It’s a vicious circle. Confidence is one of the keys in Singapore and when your teammate is on top like Nico was, it becomes difficult. »
