Mercedes will not appeal Rosberg’s penalty after all
Although Mercedes had planned to appeal against the penalty that pushed Nico Rosberg back to 3rd place in the race on the evening of the British Grand Prix, it has decided to withdraw its intention.
In the evening of the British Grand Prix, the race management decided to penalize Nico Rosberg and his team for an illicit radio exchange concerning the German driver’s gearbox.
In difficulty with his 7th gear, Rosberg had then sought help from his pit crew who gave him too much information in a radio exchange considered prohibited.
This is how a 10-second penalty, added to his race time, was imposed on him, thus pushing him to 3rd place in the Grand Prix, behind Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and reducing his lead in the drivers’ world championship to just one point ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, the Grand Prix winner.
Initially, Mercedes had decided to appeal this sanction, but announced it had reversed its decision: Mercedes AMG F1 team has decided to withdraw its intention to appeal the decision imposed by the race management of the British Grand Prix […] The advice given to avoid seventh gear was considered to be against TD / 06-16, and therefore Article 27.1 of the sporting regulations, stated a communiqué from the German team.
