Lewis Hamilton: Best weekend of the year!
Once again victorious in front of his home crowd, Lewis Hamilton communed with the crowd for a long time after the podium. It was an important victory of the season, bringing him to within one point of Nico Rosberg in the championship after the German driver was handed a penalty.
After securing pole position on Saturday, Lewis Hamilton could have lost everything right from the start when the rain appeared on the Silverstone track, just minutes before lights out.
A start under the safety car regime came to thwart all attack attempts from his competitors, and the Briton was able to soar to victory in front of his home crowd, the 4th of his career at Silverstone: « The best weekend of the whole year! I couldn’t believe it when it started to rain before the start. I thought ‘is this for real, really?’ It made things even more difficult for everyone. » he said after the race.
But Hamilton managed his race masterfully, despite a few small scares on the track, notably in the first corner, but also behind the safety car which he almost collided with, but fortunately for him, without consequences on his race: « It was really slow [behind the safety car] and my rear brakes started to get too cold. I then tried to warm them up and before I realized it, I almost hit the back of it. Thank God, I was able to turn. Everything was okay and from that moment, I felt really comfortable on the wet. I would like to greatly thank the team for the tremendous work they’ve done. »
The Briton experienced incomparable emotions in front of his audience this weekend: « And the crowd…but where did they all come from? It’s really impressive! You will never see this so closely in another country! And this truly shows the country’s passion for sports, even in these weather conditions! It’s beyond my wildest dreams, really. »
