Ferrari: Vettel ecstatic, Räikkönen frustrated in Montreal

Sebastian Vettel gave his all at the wheel of his Ferrari to get as close as possible to the two untouchable Mercedes.

With less than two tenths of a second behind Lewis Hamilton’s pole position, the German had reason to be satisfied with his third place on the grid. Especially since the race pace of the red car is quite good: After free practice 3, I knew it would be possible to aim for pole position. The car was perfect all day and we made a step forward. I was very happy with my last qualifying lap, I knew we would be very close, but unfortunately not close enough. So I think everything wasn’t perfect. I lost a bit of time exiting turn 10. I got back on the gas a bit too early and lost some traction, which cost me a bit of speed on the next straight but probably not more than a half-tenth, so we couldn’t have been higher on the grid.

On the other hand, the disappointment was in Kimi Räikkönen’s camp on Saturday evening. The Finn was unable to find the right formula to be higher than sixth place on the grid: Since Friday afternoon, we’ve been doing a good job and we’ve managed to significantly improve the car’s behavior. But for qualifying, it wasn’t easy to get the car where we wanted it. It was quite a tough session due to the weather conditions and I wasn’t very happy with my driving. I had some issues here and there […] but I’m sure the car will be better for the race.
