Manor: Haryanto in the wall but still beating Wehrlein
Making their Formula 1 debuts in Monaco, Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto had mixed fortunes. The Indonesian nevertheless had the luxury of twice outpacing his team-mate, despite a violent off-track excursion in FP2.
The day was going quite well until my crash. In a few words, that’s the summary of Rio Haryanto’s session, who was discovering Monaco at the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
The Indonesian hadn’t actually underperformed until then, regularly outperforming his teammate during the first two free practice sessions of this Monaco weekend.:« It’s unfortunate and it’s really a shame not to have been able to complete our program because preparation is a key element here. We’ll have better luck in FP3, I hope. »
For his part, Pascal Wehrlein managed to complete his program, even though the circumstances and events experienced in FP1 slightly prevented him from running as much as he would have liked: « During the first session, we couldn’t run as much as we wanted due to a combination of factors, such as the virtual safety car and the red flag at the end of the session. The second session was more productive, and we were able to get a lot of work done. »
It was a day of firsts for the German who said he was satisfied with his day: « Today was the first time I drove on this incredible circuit and also the first time we used the Ultra Soft tires, so we still have a lot to do. But it’s not a bad start to the weekend for us. I look forward to Saturday to get back on track. »
