Toro Rosso aims for the top of the table after a successful day
The two Toro Rosso drivers found themselves at the top of the leaderboard on this first day. Daniil Kvyat seems to have got the measure of his new single-seater, and was ahead of his team-mate Carlos Sainz in both sessions.
Like their big sisters, the Red Bulls, the Toro Rosso cars, powered by a year-old Ferrari power unit, succeeded in their first day by breaking into the top of the standings.
Daniil Kvyat, who has had time to digest his demotion in Barcelona, showed impressive performances by outpacing his teammate in every session: « I think it’s a pretty good day for us. We did a lot of very useful laps and had a busy day. We still have a lot to review tonight and tomorrow. I think we are performing well and have interesting potential, and if we continue to do our homework well, we could have a big weekend. »
On his side, Carlos Sainz does not dwell on the domination of his teammate and prefers to focus on his own enjoyment on track: « I had a lot of fun here today! Having a calm day in Monaco is always important to build confidence for the rest of the weekend. The track is much faster compared to last year, and the times are starting to drop nicely. I was quite surprised by the degradation of the Ultra Soft tires, it won’t be easy to maintain them during the race. But it’s the same for everyone, so we’ll see how it goes. »
