Ferrari: A Day Without for Vettel and Räikkönen in Mexico
For the first time this season, neither of the two Ferraris finished the race. Sebastian Vettel made a mistake sending him into the wall, while Kimi Räikkönen was taken out by a very aggressive Valtteri Bottas.
Ferrari left the Mexican Grand Prix with zero points on the world championship scoreboard. Sebastian Vettel, who was 3rd on the starting grid, had a poor start to his race by making a more than average start.
Hit by Daniel Ricciardo at the first corner, the German couldn’t make his way back up through the pack quickly enough before making a mistake and sending his car into the wall: « Everything started with my bad start. With the puncture, my race was already over. Of course, we always try to bounce back after that, but in trying, I made two mistakes and the second one put me out. » he stated after the race.
The quadruple German world champion takes full responsibility for his mistake: « It was not a good day for us…the car was good, the drivers were not. My wish was to be able to put pressure on the Mercedes, but that was no longer possible after my puncture. »
On his side, Kimi Räikkönen once again faced a very aggressive Valtteri Bottas. The Williams driver touched the right rear wheel of the Ferrari during a forceful overtake, breaking the suspension of the red car and thus ending Räikkönen’s race: “There are always two different ways to see the incident,” expressed the Ferrari driver after his retirement. “But to be honest, I didn’t expect less. It’s racing. But after what happened in Russia, I expected it a bit. Did he do it on purpose? I don’t know, it’s up to you to see.”
