Mexico: Could a volcanic eruption disrupt the GP?

It seems that the elements are unleashing on Formula 1 right now. After Hurricane Patricia heavily disrupted the United States Grand Prix by pouring liters of rain on the Austin circuit, it’s now the turn of a volcano to threaten the race in Mexico this weekend.

Indeed, the Popocatepetl volcano, more commonly known as El Popo, has erupted in the last few hours. What worries the Grand Prix organizers is that this volcano is located only 75 km from the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

A cloud of ash has risen to more than 2,500 meters in altitude and appears to be heading straight towards the circuit. For the time being, no session postponement or cancellation is expected, but meteorologists are keeping a watchful eye on this phenomenon… especially since rain is also forecast for this weekend…
