Toro Rosso: Sainz wants to avoid controversies
After a turbulent Hungarian Grand Prix where Max Verstappen secured an impressive 4th place for Toro Rosso, Carlos Sainz was angry with his team, accusing them of favoritism towards his Dutch teammate.
Toro Rosso achieved its best result since Sébastien Vettel’s victory in Italy in 2008, with Max Verstappen’s 4th place finish. However, this success in the race was somewhat overshadowed by Carlos Sainz’s statements accusing his team, after the race, of favoring his teammate at his expense.
« I am angry because I was having an excellent race until my retirement! (…) The team did not explain to me why they didn’t bring me in first to the pits when I was ahead of Max. You can imagine my anger! I then stopped after everyone else, which caused me to lose places, while Max moved up in the standings. I do not understand this decision » the Spaniard notably stated after the race.
But with hindsight and after an explanation with his team, the rookie wanted to moderate his comments in the columns of the Spanish newspaper Marca: « They wanted us both to pass the Williams cars and that seemed to be the best solution. I don’t want any controversy, I’m just doing my best and I hope to get a good result in my next race with Toro Rosso. »
