Ecclestone: “What happened is truly tragic”
Bernie Ecclestone was deeply moved by the announcement of Jules Bianchi's death. He hopes that in the future, such a tragedy will no longer happen in Formula 1.
Following the announcement of Jules Bianchi’s death on July 18, many figures from the motorsport world have paid tribute to the young French driver.
Among them, Bernie Ecclestone, the former chief executive of Formula 1, who was deeply affected by the announcement: « It was really very sad to hear the news about Jules. It’s truly a shame to lose someone so talented at his age, he was a wonderful person. What happened is really tragic. We must not let this happen again. »
The Briton nevertheless highlights the progress made by Formula 1 in the field of safety: “If you had to choose to have an accident, you would surely choose to have it in Formula 1, because it’s probably the safest discipline. What happened to Jules is really very, very, very unlucky. Of course, it remains dangerous. We have 20 races a year, so you can see the number of accidents there are. We do our best, and we have always done our best, to ensure the drivers’ safety.”
Ecclestone, however, returns to the circumstances of Bianchi’s accident: « The tractor should never have been there. We did a considerable amount of work to ensure that when a car goes off the track and hits something, there are tire barriers or whatever else, and that everything goes well. »
