Honda is ready to supply its engine to other F1 teams
The engine manufacturer Honda has stated that it would be ready to supply other Formula 1 teams in the near future. The construction of a new factory in England and the increase of its staff would already be underway.
Despite a difficult start with McLaren, engine manufacturer Honda remains focused on the future and plans to supply its power units to other Formula 1 teams in a relatively short time frame.
Our colleagues from Crash.net have accessed an internal document from the Japanese engine manufacturer confirming these statements. In it, one can notably read: « Currently, Honda exclusively supplies its power units to the McLaren team, but it is planned to become a key supplier for other Formula 1 teams. »
This development would be possible in particular because Honda will invest in the premises of Mugen’s technical center in Milton Keynes, England. However, the investment will not stop there: This development will offer significant employment opportunities for specialized engineers and support staff. Initially, the facility will generate around 35 full-time jobs, which will be a mix of highly skilled engineering positions and support staff. By 2018, the facility is expected to directly employ about 65 staff members, specifies the Japanese engine manufacturer.
Ultimately allowing Honda to supply other Formula 1 teams in the future: « We have an eye on the future, when we entered Formula 1, the FOM and the FIA told us that we would need to supply multiple teams, this facility will allow us to do that. »
A rumor already mentions advanced contacts between the Manor team and the Japanese engine manufacturer. As a result, the British team could become a “B” team for McLaren.
