Ferrari: Marchionne finds F1 too “complicated”

In the midst of reflecting on its future, Formula 1 seems at a crossroads. The GPDA, the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, has notably launched a large survey among fans of the sport to understand their expectations.

But already, some prominent figures have their opinions on the matter. Ferrari President, Sergio Marchionne, for example, believes that Formula 1 should simplify its regulations to make them more understandable to the general public: « The most important thing would be to reduce the complexity surrounding this sport. We have created a myriad of rules that make everyone’s life impossible. We need to speak with all the team bosses and understand what they think, in terms of technical repercussions, of every decision we might make. »

Of course, the position of the historic Formula 1 teams, which would not want to lose their advantages acquired over many years, could be a hindrance to this revolution. Marchionne is aware of this: “I think a lot of these things have been caused by a defense mechanism of certain historic teams that have tried to protect people in particular positions – including Ferrari at one point. This proves how fleeting victory is if you don’t manage it intelligently. I think we have gone too far, we need to return to the true fundamental desire of the sport, which is simplicity,” he concludes.
