The cause of Räikkönen’s spin identified by Ferrari
Kimi Räikkönen explained after yesterday's race that an issue with his engine mapping was the cause of his spin during the Grand Prix.
While driving towards a podium finish behind the two untouchable Mercedes, Kimi Räikkönen treated us to a spin at the hairpin of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal this weekend, thus destroying all his chances of finishing the race in the top three.
Before knowing the reason for this spin, Maurizio Arrivabene, the sporting director of Scuderia Ferrari, seemed somewhat annoyed by what he initially considered a mistake by his driver: « My current feeling? If I share my impressions, I’m going to be rude, so it’s really not the right moment! » he said just after the race.
But since then, it seems that Ferrari and Kimi Räikkönen have managed to identify the problem encountered by the Finn: « Clearly, something unusual happened, otherwise I wouldn’t have spun. » stated the 2007 world champion.
« Something happened after the pit stop, with the mapping or something like that. It’s something we know now and we probably could have avoided by being smarter… but it’s just mapping. »
Räikkönen even specifies his sensations during the incident: « I don’t know how to explain it, but it was borderline. You press a bit more on the pedal and it makes a huge difference in the torque. I had no way to control it. It’s stupid, but it happened and we need to learn from it. »
