Mercedes: Hamilton Ahead of Rosberg on the Streets of Monaco
The Mercedes team once again monopolizes the front row of the starting grid. This time, unlike the last Grand Prix in Spain, it's Lewis Hamilton who leads his teammate Nico Rosberg during a crucial session for tomorrow's race.
Lewis Hamilton will start tomorrow for the first time in his career from pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix. A significant event, on his teammate’s turf, he had been waiting for a long time: “My first pole position in Monaco! I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’ve lived here these past few years, which makes this pole even more special,” he said after the session.
But obtaining it wasn’t so easy for the Briton, especially due to tire management: « Today, getting the tires up to temperature was really tough. We had an out lap, a warm-up lap, and finally a fast lap. But that’s only half the job; there’s still a long way to go. »
Nico Rosberg, after two unfortunate brake issues in Q2 and Q3, can only admit defeat: « I had found the right path in qualifying today. I had a good Q2, but I lost the pace at the end, it’s a shame. I had to push really hard and I went beyond the limits. Lewis did a good job and, unfortunately for me, it’s going to be difficult to win the race. But tonight, I’ll dream about my start in Barcelona and hope to have the same tomorrow. »
Despite the excellent overall result of his team, Toto Wolff, the executive director of Mercedes, remains cautious: “We will have to stay on our guard tomorrow and extract the full potential of the car because our competitors are not far behind. We will attack.”
