Iran wants to host Formula 1
The Iranian government has announced the construction of a future circuit with the aim of hosting a round of the Formula 1 World Championship. The project is expected to take place on the island of Qeshm.
The export of Formula 1 beyond the borders of Europe is not about to stop. It is known that Bernie Ecclestone enjoys bringing the discipline to new horizons. After a return to Mexico this year, it’s Azerbaijan that should host Formula 1 in 2016 as part of the European Grand Prix.
Another country is now positioning itself on the list of contenders for a spot on the global calendar. Indeed, Iran has announced the construction of a circuit with the aim of hosting a future race. The president of the Iran Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization, Masoud Soltanifar, recently stated about this in the Republic News Agency: “Iran has more and more young people whose interest in racing is increasing. Formula 1 has a great future in Iran. We have the potential to become one of the world’s top destinations for the discipline.”
The circuit is expected to be built on Qeshm Island, just a few kilometers from Dubai and Bahrain. This is Iran’s second proposed project, following the attempt to construct a circuit in the suburbs of Tehran in 2011.
Recently, Ecclestone had stated that Iran was at “the top of the list” to host a new race in the coming years.
