German GP: Towards a complete cancellation of the race
The Hockenheim circuit does not wish to organize the German Grand Prix of Formula 1 scheduled for the weekend of July 19, 2015. The organizers believe they do not have enough time to sell the tickets.
The complications surrounding the organization of the German Grand Prix seem to be escalating and taking a decisive turn. After the Nürburgring, initially scheduled to host the race, threw in the towel, it is now the Hockenheim circuit’s turn to withdraw.
The owner of the circuit, Georg Seiler, told the magazine Bild: « We no longer have hope that the German Grand Prix will take place here. We have done everything we could in recent years to make the public happy. But the time is too short now to organize the race here. There would be a risk that the quality of the event would suffer. »
It would therefore seem that there is no solution for Germany to host Formula 1 this year. The Grand Prix could indeed be removed from the 2015 calendar with serious consequences for the future of the event in the discipline.
The situation Germany is facing is reminiscent of what France experienced, which, after failing financially to bring Formula 1 to its territory, has not been part of the discipline’s global calendar since the 2008 season.
If the German Grand Prix is no longer on the calendar, the 2015 season will now have 19 events, the same as last year. To date, Formula 1 has not yet managed to reach the symbolic number of 20 Grand Prix per year, despite the inclusion of new destinations such as Austria or Mexico.
