McLaren: Alonso and Button are eager to hit the track

The new McLaren-Honda was presented today. It will be entrusted to Fernando Alonso starting Sunday for its first laps during the first official winter testing day scheduled in Jerez.

The Spaniard, who is making his return to Woking, is eager to get behind the wheel of the new MP4-30 and start its development: “We are ready to face a steep learning curve, but it’s clear from the inside view of the McLaren-Honda team that there is a total commitment. We are all focused on the challenge ahead, and I feel very honored to be part of a relationship that has shared so much history together. My goal is to help write a new chapter in the history of McLaren-Honda. We understand the effort and teamwork needed to bring the team to where it should be, at the front of the grid, and all our energy will be focused on this goal. Our main objective will be development. It’s going to be a real privilege to be the first person to drive the new McLaren-Honda MP4-30 at Jerez, and I can’t wait for that moment.”

The double world champion is sharper than ever to face this new challenge and try to make up for the last five unfruitful years spent at Ferrari: « Although the winter period is a time of rest and relaxation, my motivation could not be stronger for the new season. I trained a lot during this winter break to reach my peak physical condition and worked hard to prepare for this new era with McLaren-Honda. I’ve never felt better or more ready for a new season. »

On his side, Jenson Button is about to start his sixth season of partnership with the McLaren team, which doesn’t prevent him from being as excited as on the first day at the sight of the new MP4-30: « The winter break has really given me a sense of renewal to start 2015: continuing my relationship with McLaren, getting married, and now embarking on such an exciting chapter: with the new partnership between McLaren and Honda. I trained hard during the winter, and I’m absolutely eager to jump into the new car! It has been interesting to spend time in the factory over the past few weeks. You can really feel a sense of optimism and confidence. I’ve never seen such motivation among the guys; we are all eager to go to Jerez and work hard on the development of our new car. »

Of course, the Briton expects to go through some tough moments in 2015. But his motivation remains intact: « We are under no illusion that it will be easy. We face a huge challenge to close the gap with our rivals. We finished 2014 with great momentum and we fully intend to continue in 2015. »

The new partnership between the two very experienced world champions is also a source of satisfaction for both parties involved. Alonso says he is very excited to challenge Jenson Button, whom he considers a great teammate and an experienced competitor, while the Briton is convinced that their combined experience will only bring benefits to the team.
