Esteban Gutierrez could choose a reserve role for 2015
Esteban Gutierrez and his current teammate, Adrian Sutil, have not been renewed at Sauber for next year. The Mexican might well look to take on a reserve role with a leading team in 2015.
The situation with the drivers at Sauber for next year is already known. Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr will apparently be the main drivers, although there is still some doubt regarding the contracts of Adrian Sutil and Giedo van der Garde, who both claim to have a valid one for the coming year.
Esteban Gutierrez’s case is however clearer: the Mexican will no longer be part of the Swiss team after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. However, when asked about his future, his response is direct: « I don’t know. There were rumors about Lotus, but we know the situation now. »
The young driver, who will conclude his second season in the discipline this weekend, might well turn towards a test driver role in a top team next year: « In Formula 1, you must always have a plan A, B, and C. So yes, a reserve driver role in a strong team is one of the options. But we also have other options. We hope to be able to say more in a few weeks. »
The main goal for Gutierrez is of course to keep a foot in Formula 1: “I want to continue racing, that’s the goal.” A scenario that might have materialized with Sauber, but the driver himself decided to stop all discussions with his team: “The negotiations were not heading in a good direction for my career. So I decided not to go further, to leave, and to take a risk.”
