India could return to the F1 calendar in 2016
The Indian Grand Prix, absent from the calendar this year for economic reasons, could return in 2016. Bernie Ecclestone stated that he was working on this possibility.
Launched in 2011, the Indian Grand Prix, held on the Buddh Circuit in the suburbs of New Delhi, lasted no more than three years. This year, the event was removed from the calendar due to financial problems and tax regulations between the event organizers and the country.
However, these issues are said to be on the verge of being resolved, and Bernie Ecclestone would agree to reinstate the race in the global Formula 1 calendar starting in 2016: « We had discussions that bore fruit during a meeting in Russia. I have been assured that the issues related to taxes and others have been resolved, and we are therefore well on track for a return. »
Ecclestone nevertheless specifies that the race cannot be organized before the 2016 season, which should also see the arrival of the European Grand Prix in Azerbaijan on the Baku circuit: « It’s too late for 2015 now, but we are working for the 2016 season. »
The question remains whether a calendar with more than twenty races in 2016 is credible. If so, other Grand Prix events could be threatened.
