Rosberg: The doubling of points would not offer him a discounted title
Nico Rosberg, currently second in the drivers' world championship, believes that if he were to win the title in Abu Dhabi, thanks to the doubling of points on that occasion, it would not detract from the beauty of his final victory.
Currently, Nico Rosberg is in second place in the World Drivers’ Championship, 24 points behind his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Only the two men can still win the title this season.
Among the still possible scenarios, there is one quite amusing but realistic one that could occur at the end of the season. If the Briton further increases his lead over his rival by the evening of the Brazilian Grand Prix, he still would not be able to secure the title. He could even find himself with a 49-point lead over Rosberg, still having to worry in Abu Dhabi about a possible retirement that could allow his best enemy to collect the 50 points of victory and claim the title with a single point advantage.
Obtaining the title in this way wouldn’t bother Rosberg, both in substance and form, as he confided this week: « It is what it is. Actually, I don’t care. As long as I have a one-point lead under the checkered flag in Abu Dhabi, I wouldn’t worry about the why and how. It’s the same for everyone… it’s a childhood dream, isn’t it, to be a Formula 1 world champion? That would be really special. »
Even if Mercedes might dominate the pack again in 2015, Nico Rosberg doesn’t want to think that far ahead and remains focused on his main goal at the moment, which is to become world champion this year: « Of course, there are very, very good chances of wins in 2015 as well, because our car is so strong and our team is doing a great job. But I’m not really thinking that far ahead. I’m just focused on the moment and I want to give my maximum. Right now, it’s just better driving that I’m missing. »
However, other observers, such as Alain Prost for example, believe that Mercedes’ dominance could fade as early as next season. A perhaps unique chance for Nico Rosberg to win his first title.
