Kobayashi will indeed be at the wheel of the Caterham F1 in Japan
The Caterham F1 team has confirmed that Kamui Kobayashi will indeed be the driver for the Japanese weekend at Suzuka alongside Marcus Ericsson. However, Roberto Merhi will be in his seat for the first free practice session on Friday.
The situation of Kamui Kobayashi has been more than unstable for several months at Caterham. After being replaced by André Lotterer for the Belgian Grand Prix, the Japanese driver was only confirmed in his seat very late for the following races.
His presence this weekend in Japan, in front of his audience, was also hypothetical, but the Caterham leaders apparently did not want to deprive the many fans present at Suzuka of their favorite driver and confirmed Kobayashi’s presence at the wheel of the CT05.
The driver is obviously very happy to be able to race this weekend in front of his audience: « I am very excited to be back in front of my Japanese fans and to race at Suzuka. The Japanese Grand Prix has always been special for me. It was here that I took my first steps in Formula 1 in 2009 during free practice and it was also here that I got my first podium in 2012. This year, I will be able to return to Suzuka to thank my fans for the support they give me. It means a lot to me. »
However, as in Monza last month, Ricardo Merhi, currently part of the Formula Renault 3.5 championship, will take the Japanese driver’s seat during the first free practice session on Friday. The young Spaniard is pleased to be able to renew the experience: « I won’t be starting from scratch like last time, so I think I can go a bit faster. I have never driven in Japan, so I will have to learn the track while getting used to the car. But it’s a dream come true to be able to drive on this very special Suzuka track. »
