Rosberg blames himself for the mistakes during the Italian GP

In the lead for more than two-thirds of the GP, Nico Rosberg made two costly mistakes braking at the first chicane: the first on the 9th lap, costing him more than a second of his lead over a duo formed by Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton, and the second on the 29th lap, where, with less than seven-tenths of a second ahead of his teammate, he could only assess the damage.

After the race, he reflected on the moment that cost him the lead: « Lewis was catching up to me, and I had to increase my pace to keep the lead, which made me make a mistake—it’s my fault. It cost me the lead of the race in the end, which is very disappointing. Monza is one of the most demanding circuits for braking due to the low downforce and very high speeds. It’s not an excuse, it’s just how it is. It’s a challenge here, and unfortunately, I made the same mistake twice in the race, » he explained during a press conference.

« It’s a shame that it didn’t work out for us today. Lewis drove very well, so he deserves the victory, » continued the German who knows nonetheless that he still has a margin in the championship: « I’m of course disappointed, but I’m still second, I scored a lot of points, so it’s not a complete disaster: I only lost seven points to Lewis. »

Hamilton therefore gains 7 points on Rosberg in the championship. The gap between the two men thus goes from 29 before the GP to 22. There are 175 points left to be earned, at most, until the end of the season.

Once again the victim of boos and whistles from the audience on the podium, the championship leader is resigned and hopes that time will heal the situation: « It’s not nice, but what can I say? I hope that with time they will forgive and forget, that would be great. And I have apologized, I can’t do anything more. The team deserves for everything that happened to be behind us and we must move forward. Spa is behind me […] today I just made a mistake. »
