Sunday: McLaren F1 loses the rain gamble at the Hungarian GP
After a strong start to the Grand Prix, McLaren took a gamble by keeping the intermediate tires and waiting for a possible shower that never came.
Jenson Button (no.22) – 10th
Although the Briton praises the quality of the race, he can only lament McLaren team’s missed gamble: « I am happy it was an exciting race for the fans, but it was tough for us. We did not make the right decisions today. The opening laps were great: I climbed to 5th but it was not the same after that. When the track started to dry, we thought it was going to rain again: unfortunately, we were the only ones who thought that. […] I think I did everything well today, and in all conditions, that’s why it’s difficult, but we win as a team and we lose as a team, and we will quickly forget about this and move forward. »
Kevin Magnussen (No. 20) – 12th
For the Dane, the situation is the same, but he thinks it was a risk worth taking: « We didn’t make the most of the elements today, but starting from the pit lane, I don’t think I really lost too much time by staying on intermediates when everyone switched to dry tires. I knew we were taking a risk by waiting for more rain, but I think we had to take that risk. I don’t think things would have been very different if we had chosen a different strategy, but now we need to sit down with the engineers and strategists to discuss it. »
