Hamilton in talks for an extension with Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have begun negotiations to extend the contract of the British world champion. The current agreement could be extended until 2017 with a significant salary increase.
After the extension of Nico Rosberg’s contract for several years, Mercedes and Toto Wolff have entered negotiations with Lewis Hamilton to extend his contract with the German team.
The executive director of the star firm revealed in the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung that he had started talks with Hamilton, hoping they would result in a welcome stability within the team: “We have already sat down together and are negotiating a new multi-year contract with Lewis. Lewis is one of the team’s foundations, and we hope he will be there for a long time to come.”
On his side, Hamilton had already revealed last weekend that he did not see himself anywhere other than with Mercedes for the upcoming seasons: « It would be really difficult for me to see myself elsewhere. »
According to the British newspaper The Mirror, this new contract proposal would cover the next three seasons with an option for a fourth year and would amount to more than 70 million pounds sterling, or nearly 90 million euros.
The negotiations therefore seem to be well advanced, and it would not be surprising if an announcement is made soon, either during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend or during the summer break. As a result, both drivers could focus freely on their battle at the top of the world championship.
