German GP: Button criticizes Hamilton after their contact
Very aggressive during the German Grand Prix of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton was involved in several collisions, including one with Jenson Button. The McLaren driver found it "strange."
Starting from 20th on the grid, Lewis Hamilton had to carve his way through the pack to reach the podium. Like a sprinter at the end of a Tour de France stage, the Briton had many close encounters during his battles, with Adrian Sutil, Kimi Räikkönen, and Jenson Button.
Regarding the contact with the McLaren driver, whom Hamilton overtook on the inside while merging, he admitted his mistake; he even apologized by gesturing to the 2009 world champion as he passed him. « I had a small collision with Jenson, but I thought he was letting me pass—poor judgment on my part. » A poor judgment that damaged the left part of the front wing of the Mercedes W05 Hybrid.
On Jenson Button’s side, however, the tone is less friendly: “Why would we let someone pass? I don’t know if you’ve noticed but many drivers take this line to get a good exit in this corner,” he stated for *Autosport*. “I think the problem with Lewis is that he expected me to let him pass.”
The McLaren driver added sarcastically: « I don’t think I’m the only person he ran into today. It’s strange, when the car is that fast, you wouldn’t think he could be involved in so many battles but there you go. He ran into my rear wheel, that’s all I have to say and I don’t know more than that. »
« I am here to run my race. It would be annoying if we all let him through when he’s moving up the pack, » he concluded. Lewis Hamilton finished in 3rd place and Jenson Button in 8th position.
