Ferrari: Mattiacci wants something new in 2015!

On the evening of a British Grand Prix that saw Fernando Alonso engage in a thrilling battle with Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull to ultimately secure sixth place, Marco Mattiacci, Ferrari’s new sporting director for the past few weeks, shared his ambition and optimism for next year.

He spoke in particular about the progress made by his team since his arrival: « We don’t have to make announcements. The best announcements are the results, that’s the best thing a team can announce. Of course, we are working to improve, and we finished sixth [at Silverstone]. But on the other hand, we are not really happy to finish sixth either. But I must also say that we have brought many aerodynamic developments in recent races that have had a positive effect on the track. So that’s a good starting point compared to what we were doing before. »

Are restructurings to be expected within Ferrari in the coming months? Matticacci half-confesses: « From there, we need to prepare a different team for 2015. Do we need to improve? Do we need to do it over time? Yes, that’s our current position. »

However, the Italian does not wish to individualize his remarks nor comment on the rumors of the departure of Luca Marmorini, the engine engineer, or Fernando Alonso, as it has been written and said in the press: « No one from our side has made an announcement on this subject. As I have already said, I do not want to point fingers at anyone, especially during a race weekend. I do not think that an immediate movement of individuals provides a significant improvement to the car. It’s just a technical aspect, and we need to give even more to improve the car. »

Furthermore, Ferrari and Mattiacci are reportedly negotiating an extension of Fernando Alonso’s contract until 2017 to build the team around him, a subject that the Spaniard clearly doesn’t want to hear about at the moment, as he mentioned last weekend at Silverstone: « I don’t want to project myself so far into the future because there are other much more important priorities at the moment. What happens after 2016 is not my priority. »
