Sunday: Ricciardo, the only bright spot for Red Bull at the Austrian GP
At home, Red Bull had one of its worst races of the F1 season: while Daniel Ricciardo managed to save a spot in the top 10 despite a difficult first lap, Sebastian Vettel suffered another mechanical failure before retiring.
Daniel Ricciardo (No. 3) – 8th
Despite a relatively good start, the winner of the Canadian Grand Prix was one of the big losers off the line after the first corner: « It was a frustrating day; it’s never nice to drop back on the first lap. Apart from that, actually, it was one of our best starts this season, even though I think Kevin (Magnussen, Editor’s note) on the inside had a better one. I tried to take the outside, which was the wrong thing to do, because you lose too much on the exit. So then, I was swamped on the straight. »
The Australian, frustrated by the start of the race, was then unable to regain the lost positions due to a too slow pace, especially on the straights, and this was the case until the last moment, when we were able to overtake the Force India (of Nico Hülkenberg, Ed.). The last lap made me smile, but without that, it wasn’t a great race for us – we have a bit of work to do.
Sebastian Vettel (No. 1) – Retirement
Nightmarish afternoon for Sebastian Vettel who was relegated to the back of the pack by a temporary malfunction of his hybrid unit, then had to change his wing after a contact with Esteban Gutierrez’s Sauber. He eventually retired to spare the mechanics: « We were hoping for a safety car, but it never came. »
He assesses the start of the 2014 season, which hasn’t been ideal for him: « Obviously, it’s a tough first half of the season with some retirements and other issues, but it’s part of the game. […] It’s good that Daniel was able to take some points for us. It would be wrong to say I’m used to it, but obviously, we’ve already had a lot of problems so far, and I’ve been calmer when the problem arose. »
