Hamilton and Rosberg with Mercedes until 2016
The future of the Mercedes driver duo has been a hot topic for several weeks. The team's director, Toto Wolff, ended the speculation by indicating that both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have contracts binding them to the team for the next two seasons.
Mercedes has quickly become the team to be with to win. This status naturally attracts the interest of many drivers, notably Fernando Alonso, disappointed with Ferrari, and whom some were already envisioning in the seat of a silver car instead of Lewis Hamilton for the coming years.
The same Hamilton, who is said to be weakened within Mercedes, was reportedly seen in Maranello this weekend, visiting the Ferrari factory, although without any confirmation on his part. It took no more for the rumor to suggest that the 2008 world champion might join the prancing horse team next season.
But to silence these rumors, Toto Wolff, the executive director of Mercedes AMG F1, wanted to clarify that his two current drivers were under contract with the team until 2016: “Our drivers have contracts for two years, therefore, we are not considering any other possibilities,” he stated in the columns of the Spanish newspaper Marca.
However, even though he considers Fernando Alonso a very good driver, the Austrian is fully satisfied with his championship duo: « Everyone knows that he [Alonso] is one of the best drivers on the grid, and that aligns with what Mercedes wants. But we already have two of the best drivers. »
