Friday: At Mercedes, Hamilton and Rosberg keep an eye on each other
Easy leaders during Free Practice 2 of the Canadian Grand Prix in F1, the two Mercedes drivers are focused on qualifying and are keeping an eye on each other.
Lewis Hamilton (No. 44) – 2nd and 1st
For the Briton, the day was good: « I felt very good today but we still have improvements to make and there is more to come from the setup and balance tomorrow. It’s a pretty technical circuit where it’s all about curbs and corner lines; you need a car that reacts well to bumps. You’re always trying to find the limit, so we’re not yet where we want to be. »
By glancing at the competition, he notices a relative tightening: « The Ferraris seemed quite close today, and the rest of the pack seemed closer in general, but fortunately not too much! »
He is already looking ahead to qualifying and does not forget to keep an eye on the other side of the Mercedes garage: « It is very difficult to overtake here, so pole position is important. Nico seemed very fast today too, so I have my work cut out for me. We will know everyone’s pace in qualifying, so let’s wait and see what happens. »
Nico Rosberg (No. 6) – 3rd and 2nd
On the championship leader’s side, this Friday was decent, even though everything was not perfect: « It was a great day, and I felt very comfortable in my Silver Arrow. This morning, we worked on different things with the brakes that didn’t really work well, so we had to change that in the afternoon. It was much better during FP2, so I’m quite happy now. »
But he too does not lose sight of his teammate and the qualification: But I am still a tenth off the fastest time so I will work hard with our engineers tonight to find that extra pace. It’s a unique track and it’s very difficult to tackle the curbs in the right way.
