The traditional charity match preceding the Grand Prix in Monaco
As tradition has it since its creation by Prince Albert II in 1993, the charity match pitting the Formula 1 drivers' football team against the Prince's team took place this Tuesday in Monaco.
It has now become a regular event of the Monaco Grand Prix week: the football match organized by Prince Albert II took place last night, Tuesday, at the Louis II Stadium.
This charity match organized for the Star Team For Children at the initiative of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco pitted a team of Formula 1 drivers—led by captain Fernando Alonso and including Felipe Massa, Sergio Pérez, Jules Bianchi, and Giancarlo Fisichella—against Prince Albert’s team, which featured Max Biaggi (former MotoGP rider), tennis player Novak Djokovic, and former French footballer David Ginola.
If Daniil Kvyat made a mark by putting the ball in the back of the net for his team, it was his opponents who won the match with a score of 3 to 2, including a goal by Djokovic early in the game.
A message of support was sent to Michael Schumacher, who has been present every year since 1993 and is usually the captain of his team, as he continues to fight for his life at the Grenoble University Hospital following his serious skiing accident last December. The following message could be seen along the stadium’s edge: « Michael, we miss you! We await your return on the field next year. »
