Sunday: Kvyat confirmed for Toro Rosso, Vergne collides and retires
After seeing the two Toro Rosso cars score points in Melbourne and securing a solid qualification in 10th and 11th place, Red Bull's little sister team scored another point thanks to Daniil Kvyat. Unfortunately, an issue with Jean-Eric Vergne's STR9 saw him drop down the order before having to retire.
Daniil Kvyat (No. 26) – 10th
After becoming the youngest driver to score a point in Formula 1, Daniil Kvyat repeated this in Malaysia: “It’s good to finish in the top 10 for the second time in a row. This afternoon’s race was very tough and intense, with a lot of fighting.” Indeed, the young Russian driver experienced the first part of the race battling with the McLarens and the Williams, but “they were faster than me on the straight.”
But despite this great race, Daniil Kvyat does not wish to rest on his laurels and hopes for more: “I hope we continue to improve like this, given that the car definitely has good potential.” The Toro Rosso driver now looks forward to Bahrain, and he thinks “it will be interesting to go on a track where we have already tested the car.”
Jean-Eric Vergne – Withdrawal (retirement)
Despite a second consecutive qualification in the top 10, Jean-Eric Vergne couldn’t capitalize on this opportunity: « Early on, I felt some issues with the car. I lost power and saw everyone overtaking me. » In the midst of the pack, the Frenchman found himself sandwiched and admits his mistake: « I was a bit too ambitious thinking I could overtake the two cars. It wasn’t possible, and this led to the collision that damaged my front wing. »
The Toro Rosso driver returned to the track despite a compromised race start, hoping to take advantage of the rain or perhaps a safety car to catch up with the pack. But the Toro Rosso encountered some issues, which caused its abandonment: It’s a shame, given that it was a race where we could have been strong and achieved a good result. Despite this missed race, Jean-Eric Vergne wants to stay positive: We have a good car and we don’t have to wait long before getting back on track.
