Sunday: Regrets for Bottas and Massa at Williams
Despite a solid 5th place achieved by Valtteri Bottas, the Williams team has reason to harbor regrets today. An error by the Finn caused a puncture on his car and forced him to make an early stop, while Felipe Massa couldn't get past the first corner despite a strong pace demonstrated by his teammate.
Valtteri Bottas (No. 77) – 5th (after the disqualification of Ricciardo)
After a disappointing qualification in the rain, the young Williams driver is very satisfied with the car’s performance on the dry track: « The car was really very performant today, which is encouraging for the rest of the season. » Unfortunately, after a few laps and while attacking Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas made a mistake and his right rear wheel touched the wall. With a cracked rim, the tire came off, forcing the Finn to return to the pits at a slow pace before the safety car was deployed.
« I am a bit disappointed in myself because I attacked a little too much and hit the wall, which caused a puncture ». But far from letting it get him down, the Williams driver came back stronger: « I spent the rest of the race trying to make up for that mistake and managed some good overtakes, but I need to learn from this and make sure it doesn’t happen again ». And despite this good result, the driver knows he should have done better: « We should have finished higher today given the pace we had, and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in Malaysia ».
Felipe Massa (No. 19) – Retirement (collision)
After securing ninth place during the qualifiers, the Brazilian could aim for at least some points. But the faulty brakes on Kamui Kobayashi’s Caterham dictated otherwise: « I am obviously very disappointed given that I had the car to fight for the podium today, but that incident at the first corner totally ruined my race ».
Despite this, Felipe Massa wants to highlight the good sides seen this weekend: « It’s a shame, because there were a lot of good things the team could have obtained this weekend in terms of pace and reliability, so I’m just thinking about the next race and getting a solid result there. »
