His season

Once again this year, Fernando Alonso will have extracted the maximum, and even more, from his Ferrari. After a thunderous start to the season with victories in China and his home country of Spain, Alonso continues to chase Sebastian Vettel without ever managing to overtake him again. However, he will string together an interesting series of three second-place finishes between the Belgian Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, however, seemed jaded in the middle of the year, where, tired of the poor performances of his car, he vented to the press before being sternly rebuked by Lucas di Montezemolo. Alonso will nonetheless care for his image with the tifosi entirely devoted to his cause, especially with his photo on the podium of the Italian Grand Prix after his third place behind a booed Vettel.

It is true that one cannot fault the Oviedo native for fighting in all circumstances. Despite less than flattering positions on the grid, he has often brought unexpected podiums and big points to Scuderia. However, qualifying is not his favorite exercise, as evidenced by the comparison with Massa, who has outqualified him eight times. Not very flattering for a double world champion renowned as one of the most talented drivers of his generation.

He will need to make progress in this area, especially since the arrival of Kimi Räikkönen alongside him has been seen by many as a sanction for the Spaniard and a clear message from Ferrari to put pressure on him.

The editorial opinion: This year, Fernando Alonso has shown two different sides of his personality, and this has not escaped the editorial team at Fan F1. On one hand, the tireless competitor, as Benoit Fraikin notes: « His fighting spirit has once again worked wonders », but also grumbling and somewhat disheartened as the season progressed, as Fabien Gaillard perfectly highlights: « ambitious and victorious at the start of the season, he gradually became weary and, ultimately, irascible in face of the difficulties his team encountered in providing him with a car that matched his talent ».

Ultimately, even if he remains an excellent driver, as Sarah Nuyens describes him, and there’s still a dreamlike quality in watching this driver perform, according to Romain Mathon, the Spaniard will have nonetheless disappointed some, primarily Antoine Maricot, who believes that Fernando Alonso’s mask has somewhat cracked this season, with unusual mistakes, but also numerous signs of irritation towards his team.

The highlight of his season: undeniably his victory in Barcelona, in front of his own crowd, where at the foot of the podium he waved the Spanish flag before a thrilled audience. At that moment, however, he did not suspect that it would be his last victory of the season.
