His season
In the near anonymity of the back of the grid, Jules Bianchi managed a remarkable season. It’s difficult to do better at the wheel of a Marussia than to consistently outperform his teammate and regularly beat the slightly declining Caterhams.
These objectives, the Frenchman fulfilled brilliantly by regularly being the highest-ranked among drivers from small teams, both in qualifying and in races. Max Chilton, his teammate, only outperformed him a total of four times, twice in qualifying (including once when the Frenchman couldn’t participate in the session, in Monaco) and two other times in races.
Among the highlights of Jules’ almost flawless season, his place in Q2 at the Belgian Grand Prix, where he started in 15th position after navigating difficult weather conditions, and of course his 13th place in the race in Malaysia, will remain as indicators of the potential seen. In another domain, his notable retirement at the German Grand Prix, where an engine failure forced him to stop on a straight line at the Nürburgring, on a slope, leaving his unmanned MVR01 drifting in the middle of the track, will also be remembered.
It’s no surprise then that Jules Bianchi is currently the only backmarker driver confirmed for /f1/actualite/16785-classement-de-la-redaction-2013-jenson-button-10eme.html. The support he receives from Ferrari surely plays a role, but the strong season he had speaks for itself and was a decisive factor in John Booth’s decision to keep him for another year. The Frenchman will need to build on this momentum to take another step forward in /f1/actualite/16785-classement-de-la-redaction-2013-jenson-button-10eme.html.
The editorial’s view: The Motors Inside editorial team notes the challenge of starting in F1 with an underperforming car. According to Antoine Maricot, Jules Bianchi managed to stand out without scoring any points despite a late confirmation. Romain Mathon believes the Frenchman showed good adaptation to F1 from the first races, allowing him to offer Marussia the 10th place. But the hardest part is about to begin according to Benoit Fraikin: He will now have to confirm and that may be the hardest part. Charles Pic can testify to that…
The highlight of his season: his 13th place in a grueling Malaysian Grand Prix which allows his team, Marussia, to overtake Caterham in the constructors’ world championship.
