Friday: Mercedes will work on tire management
The two Mercedes drivers were competitive today in Suzuka for the first day of testing, but Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton know they still have work to do, especially with the Pirelli tires to ensure they perform well in the race on Sunday.
Nico Rosberg – 2nd and 3rd:
This Suzuka circuit is so enjoyable to drive and our car was fantastic today. We were fast on a lap and on long stints but the most important thing is how we manage the tires because it will be the key to success today. We have a lot of work ahead of us but I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend and I hope we can bother the Red Bulls a bit more.
Lewis Hamilton – 1st and 6th:
The track is so beautiful to drive, it’s fast and smooth, and our car feels really good here. But it’s also a circuit that doesn’t forgive and represents a challenge; you’re always on the edge, so the trick is to balance and control that limit. I’m happy with the position of our car after today’s first sessions, although, of course, we would like to be even more competitive. We still have work to do tonight on tire management in particular. It’s too early to think about what we can do, but I’m looking forward to having a good qualifying tomorrow, and then we’ll see what we can do in the race.
