Chilton does not have a contract with Marussia for 2014

Max Chilton is making his debut in Formula 1 this year and despite an honorable start to the season with 11 finishes in 11 Grand Prix and a best result of 14th place, the Briton does not yet know what his future holds, starting with next year.

The former GP2 driver believes he has learned a lot since his debut in Jerez de la Frontera and thinks he has progressed, but he knows he must continue to perform well if he wants to stay, as he stated during Thursday’s FIA press conference: « My situation is the same as at the beginning of the year. I signed a one-year contract. Obviously, I am a rookie just like Jules [Bianchi], and we are here to learn as much as possible. You learn a lot before reaching F1, but there is still much to do once you’re in Formula 1. So what I’m trying to do is focus on my skills to get the most out of the car and do the best possible job for the team. »

When asked if he had a deadline for his future contract, he responded in the negative: « Not that I know of. All I know is that the team would be happy to keep both of us and I will try to do the best job possible. »

Graeme Lowdon, one of the officials of the Marussia team, confirmed during the FIA press conference on Friday the Russian team’s desire to retain their driver duo for the next year, but at the moment nothing is finalized: « We are all competitors, so every position is important, and we want to maintain this 10th place [in the constructors’ championship] and continue to move forward. So it is really important. As for the drivers, it is a bit of the period where we will start making key decisions. But we will make announcements much later in the year, but our two drivers have done an excellent job, sometimes in quite difficult circumstances. There is a very good harmony in the team and a good team spirit, and it would be good to maintain that, but we will see. »
