Button and Pérez should remain at McLaren in 2014
McLaren team director, Martin Whitmarsh, stated that he wants to retain his current drivers, Jenson Button and Sergio Pérez, for the 2014 season.
The silly season is in full swing, and the craziest transfer rumors are being announced. At the center of these is Kimi Räikkönen, who is placed in various teams, including McLaren.
Consequently, and in light of recent statements by Jenson Button who might be aiming for a seat at Ferrari instead of Felipe Massa, it didn’t take much more for the rumor to suggest the British driver is leaving Woking. But how much credence should be given to this statement by the 2009 world champion: « The Ferrari seat is a great opportunity for any F1 driver. Having the chance to drive for a team like Ferrari is very exciting »
However, Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s director, has not considered changing his driver duo for the upcoming season. Button and Pérez are giving him complete satisfaction: « I believe our guys deserve to continue with us. They have done a good job so far, and it’s a good driver duo. They deserve a better McLaren for next year and that’s what we hope to give them. »
If Sergio Pérez’s contract is indeed signed for 2014, Jenson Button’s is evidently not yet, as the main interested party confirms: « I want to be here [editor’s note: at McLaren] next season, but I have not yet received confirmation of that from the team, so we have to wait. »
Everything suggests that there won’t be much movement among the gray and red for the coming year.
