Vergne: “They ask me to do my job”
Excluded from the candidates to replace Webber in 2014, Jean-Eric Vergne believes he is still in the running. However, rather than listening to rumors, he prefers to focus on his work with the Toro Rosso team.
Christian Horner recently hinted that Jean-Eric Vergne was no longer in the running to replace Mark Webber in 2014, but the Frenchman insisted on denying this statement.
« It’s not something I’ve confirmed; I’ve actually somewhat confirmed the opposite, to be honest. You can write a little of what you want in the media, » JEV explained during a press briefing today at the Hungaroring.
The French driver believes that a Toro Rosso driver should be promoted to give meaning to the young driver support program established by Red Bull for many years now: « It’s a good thing whether it’s Daniel or me, no matter the team’s choice, it’s important that one of us goes to Red Bull because it gives meaning to the Red Bull driver program. And if it really has to be between Daniel and Räikkönen, I would 100% prefer it to be Daniel going to Red Bull. »
Asked if he had been set specific goals for the end of the season with the prospect of that seat, the Frenchman replied negatively: « I’m just asked to do my job and that’s what I’m going to do this weekend. [It is] absolutely not [more stressful]. The pressure is not on me, it’s on Daniel if there has to be any pressure. »
