Young Drivers Tests – Day 2: Ricciardo First and Third

A unique feature of this second day of young driver testing at Silverstone, Daniel Ricciardo drove for two teams and the Australian was one of the fastest on track. He set the best time at the wheel of his Toro Rosso STR8, being the only one to break the 1:33 minute mark on a lap this morning.

This afternoon, he was driving the Red Bull RB9, with a brief visit to the gravel trap after just a few laps but fortunately without any serious consequences. He was able to get back on track afterward, setting the third-fastest time of the day, thus marking his name twice on the timesheet.

Still on the side of the members of the Red Bull driver program, Carlos Sainz Jr, for his part, sets the second fastest time, just 44 thousandths off Ricciardo’s best time. Following for the top 10 are Davide Valsecchi in 4th, Oliver Turvey, James Calado, Antonio Felix da Costa, Davide Rigon, Pastor Maldonado, and Nico Hülkenberg.

On the problems side, there is little to report with only a spin for Robin Frijns in the Sauber, Ricciardo’s excursion into the gravel with the Red Bull, and a radio problem for Davide Valsecchi in the Lotus.

On the attendance side on the track, Daniel Ricciardo is still leading with 107 laps completed (in two different cars). He is followed by Will Stevens (Caterham) who completed 98 laps for his first time in a Formula 1 car, then Oliver Turvey (McLaren) and Davide Rigon (Ferrari) both credited with 97 laps.

Tomorrow should be an opportunity to see new starters in action on the track, with Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull, Felipe Massa at Ferrari, Adrian Sutil at Force India, Jean-Eric Vergne at Toro Rosso, Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde at Caterham, and Jules Bianchi at Marussia. The Williams stands will also be of interest with the Scottish Susie Wolff behind the wheel of the FW35.
